Reading Launch Pad

Take off to Reading Success

My Approach:
When your child is not “catching on” and is struggling to learn to read, it can be heartbreaking, frustrating and overwhelming. It might even seem like nothing will work, but every child CAN learn to read, including yours! Your child just needs tailored, structured support to match the way s/he learns best.
Know that you are not in this alone. Research shows that as many as 1 in 10 children have reading challenges. As a reading specialist, I will work with you to figure out where there are gaps. Literacy has many components and using a diagnostic approach, I will determine where your child is struggling and create an individualized plan of support using the Orton Gillingham Approach.

 What is Orton
 Gillingham?

The Orton Gillingham Approach is a best-practice, multi-sensory method used to teach struggling readers, particularly those with dyslexia, auditory processing and speech difficulties, to become successful readers. It is known as the “gold standard” for remediating reading, writing and spelling challenges. O.G. has been around since the 1930’s and is still used today because it works! Orton Gillingham is named after its creators, Dr. Samuel Orton, a neuropsychiatrist, and Anna Gillingham, a teacher. Orton’s main area of research was studying children with language processing disorders. He was intrigued with how they learned best. Orton teamed up with Gillingham to use his findings to craft a reading instruction approach that would work for these unique individuals.

What makes O.G. "work"?

The Orton Gillingham Approach follows a specific scope and sequence. Each lesson focuses on a specific, targeted skill. The lessons are tailored to build on a student’s knowledge and to reinforce recently learned concepts until they are mastered. Even once mastered, concepts are reviewed until they become part of your child’s long-term memory. Each of the 44 phonemes (sounds) is explicitly taught, in addition to spelling rules, decoding strategies, syllable types and morphology (how words are composed of base words/roots and affixes).

In addition to repetition, O.G. incorporates multi-sensory activities, so that your child learns a skill using all pathways. Multi-sensory lessons utilize hearing (auditory), seeing (visual), touching (tactile) and moving (kinesthetic) to strengthen the connections to the brain. In addition, I continually observe your child’s progress to plan for the next lesson. We will move as quickly as possible through the scope and sequence, but as slowly as you child needs to master each new concept.

What if my child isn’t dyslexic, but is struggling with one area of reading or writing?

Private tutoring can address areas of literacy where there seems to be a weakness. We will focus on bridging the gap, so your child improves as quickly as possible. I also work with families who have a specific goal, such as improving essay writing skills to prepare for high school. The beauty of private tutoring is that I tailor fit it to your child’s needs, whatever those may be, to help guarantee success.

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading in an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. It affects one’s ability to read, spell, write and speak, yet there is no correlation to one’s overall intelligence. In fact, despite these challenges, people with dyslexia are often perceptive, quick-witted, creative thinkers who come up with unique ways to solve problems.

A lot more goes into reading than one might think. Our brains must be able to connect the appropriate sounds to letters, blend these sounds together and then connect the words into sentences and paragraphs. While doing all of this, we must also make sense of and comprehend what we’ve just read.

People with dyslexia have difficulty retrieving the sounds that go along with the letter(s) one sees on the page. This makes all of the other steps more difficult. Someone with dyslexia might read the word "cat" as "tac." Mix ups like this, make learning to read a slow and difficult process. Dyslexia doesn’t affect everyone the same way and there are varying degrees. Although there is no cure for dyslexia with the right supports, dyslexic individuals can become highly successful!

Instructional Sessions

Orton Gillingham Instruction:

Receive 1:1 individualized, structured, multi-sensory instruction using the Orton-Gillingham approach to help your child reach his/her true potential

*A minimum of two sessions a week is necessary

Private Tutoring:

  • Literacy Skills Instruction:

Is your child doing just okay in Language Arts?

I can work with your child to increase his/her reading fluency and comprehension, improve his/her spelling skills and to become a stronger writer.

  • Curriculum/Homework Support:

Does your child come home from school without a solid understanding of what was taught, resulting in completing homework independently nearly impossible since not all of the concepts are clear?

Does your child have gaps in his/her learning resulting in being below grade level in school? This can be extremely frustrating for both you and your child and doing homework can become a struggle.

I can work with your child to reinforce and solidify concepts taught in school through direct instruction and assistance with completion of homework until mastery is achieved independently.

Academic Assessment

Testing/Dyslexia Screening:

This academic educational assessment will provide a clearer picture of your child’s cognitive abilities, strengths and weaknesses. There are formal and informal components to the

assessment to capture your child’s full profile. While the tests can quantify if there is an academic or performance delay relative to your child’s peers, only a psychologist can make an official diagnosis of dyslexia. If results of the assessment are lower than expected for your child’s age, I will refer you to a psychologist or doctor for further intelligence testing using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - IV (WISC-IV).

About Me

About Me

Hello! My name is Sarah, creator of the Reading Launch Pad. As a reading specialist, I am very excited to follow my passion to ensure every child can read. There is no greater reward than watching someone overcome the obstacles that have been impeding one’s reading success. If we decide to work together, know that I am extremely committed to your child’s growth and success. It is so important for your child to see how smart he/she truly is and to experience lots of “wins”.

Ever since I was little, I have loved working with children. As a tween, I started my own Mother’s Helpers Club, modeled after one of my favourite book series, The Babysitter’s Club. In high school, I privately tutored a boy with Asperger syndrome. While in university, I worked as a nanny for a family of four girls. My parents urged me not to become a teacher, as it hadn’t been the best career choice for either of them. That’s why I started out in marketing. After a few years of working in marketing, my desire to make an important difference in people's lives lead me to pursue my master’s degree in education.

My first teaching job was at an inner-city public school in Chicago teaching fourth grade. I loved connecting with the students and sharing in their lives. Many of those students had serious challenges and it was so gratifying to be a part of their academic successes. I remember tears coming to my eyes the first time a young boy, who started the year unable to add 2+2, learned his times tables.

After getting married, I moved to Toronto and soon began working at a private day school, which was a big change from my previous job. The goal was the same, to instill a love of learning in my students and to help them succeed. I was disheartened when I saw how the education system was failing struggling readers. This led me to become an Orton-Gillingham Certified Educator, to help all children become successful readers. I have seen O.G. work and transform students' lives by increasing their self-esteem and proving to themselves that they are smart. I would love the opportunity to help your child attain that success.
